BrowserOS is an open-source, privacy-first Chromium fork (a standalone desktop browser, not an extension) with built-in AI agents that automate web tasks from natural-language prompts: clicking, typing, navigating, reading local files, and running multi-step workflows. It ships 53 built-in browser automation tools and 40+ app integrations (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Calendar) via MCP, plus scheduled tasks and a CLI to drive the browser from coding agents like Claude Code. Users bring their own provider API keys and switch between providers anytime; a default model with limited daily usage is included for testing, and local models run free via Ollama / LM Studio. Positioned as a privacy-first alternative to ChatGPT Atlas, Perplexity Comet, and Dia. Built by a YC-backed team (founded 2024, San Francisco). Licensed AGPL-3.0; available on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
How your API key is handled
Your API key is stored locally on your device. Requests are sent directly to the AI provider. Because it can be self-hosted, your key never has to touch a third-party backend.
Setup
Open settings, paste your provider API key, choose a model, and start — the key stays on your device.
