Granth is a free, local-first 'Writer Operating System' for long-form fiction and nonfiction. Projects live as human-readable .granth folders of plain Markdown and YAML on your own disk — Git-friendly and usable without the app — and writing, organizing, search, and export all work fully offline with no account. AI is an optional bring-your-own-key layer: connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, or a local model via Ollama. The API key is stored in the operating system's secure keychain — never in a file, database, or the app's config. Before any text leaves the machine, a consent dialog shows the exact payload and destination provider; every AI interaction is logged to an audit file (ai/usage/log.jsonl) inside the project folder; and AI output is suggestion-only until explicitly accepted. Features include a distraction-free editor with focus mode, typewriter scrolling, and snapshots; a 'Project Brain' that answers questions about the whole manuscript with citations into your own material; story bible, relationship map, threads, and timeline for fiction; a research vault, claim tracker, and citation engine (APA/MLA/Chicago) for nonfiction; and publication-grade export to print-ready PDF, validated EPUB, and DOCX with KDP and IngramSpark profiles. Desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux (v0.1.0) with no telemetry, no analytics, and no training on user content. Closed source with no public repository.

How your API key is handled

Your API key is stored locally on your device. Requests are sent directly to the AI provider.
