n8n is a source-available (fair-code) workflow automation platform for technical teams, combining a visual node-based builder with custom code. Its advanced-AI feature set is built on LangChain: an AI Agent node connects to chat-model sub-nodes for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini/Vertex, Azure OpenAI, Mistral, Cohere, Groq, Ollama, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, xAI Grok, AWS Bedrock and more. Each provider has its own credential type where the user pastes their own API key into n8n's encrypted credentials manager and selects it in the model node. Self-hosting keeps keys inside your own instance config and you pay the provider directly with no markup. Available as managed cloud, self-hosted (Docker/npm), and via desktop setups.

How your API key is handled

Your API key is stored locally on your device. Requests are sent directly to the AI provider. Because it can be self-hosted, your key never has to touch a third-party backend.
