Nanobrowser is an open-source (Apache-2.0) Chrome/Edge browser extension that performs AI-powered web automation through a multi-agent system (planner, navigator, validator agents) operating directly in the browser via an interactive side panel. It positions itself as a free, self-hosted alternative to OpenAI Operator. Users bring their own LLM API keys; everything runs locally and credentials never leave the browser or touch any cloud service. The project is actively maintained (latest release v0.1.13, Nov 2025) with broad provider support and is downloadable from the Chrome Web Store.
How your API key is handled
Your API key is stored in your browser's local storage. Requests are sent directly to the AI provider. Because it can be self-hosted, your key never has to touch a third-party backend.
Setup
Open the extension/app settings, paste your provider API key (kept in your browser), and pick a model.
