Subtitle Edit is a long-running, MIT-licensed open-source subtitle/caption editor (originally Windows-native, now cross-platform via v4) for creating, editing, syncing, and translating subtitles for video. Its Auto Translate feature includes a broad set of AI translation engines that the end user drives with their own API key: ChatGPT/OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, Perplexity, Mistral AI, DeepSeek, and NVIDIA, plus OpenAI-compatible local LLM backends (Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp) requiring no external key. The official docs explicitly mark these engines as "requires API key," and GitHub issue #7850 shows users supplying their own OpenAI secret key and endpoint. Separately, offline speech-to-text is handled by bundled Whisper engines (OpenAI Whisper, Faster Whisper, whisper.cpp, Const-me, etc.) running entirely on-device — not a BYOK cloud feature. The app is privacy-focused and offline-first; only the optional online translation/STT engines send data to the selected provider.
