Text Generator is an open-source (MIT) Obsidian community plugin that generates text content from reusable prompt templates directly inside your notes. It supports inline generation, batch processing, custom commands, and frontmatter-based per-note configuration. Users bring their own API keys: in plugin settings you pick a provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google/Gemini, Azure OpenAI, HuggingFace, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as Ollama/local models) and enter your own key, paying the provider directly. The plugin is widely used (~546K downloads, ~1,950 GitHub stars) and actively maintained, with the latest release (v0.8.7) shipped in April 2026.

How your API key is handled

Your API key is stored locally on your device. Requests are sent directly to the AI provider.
